Reworked fanfiction romances draw criticism. Two new romantasies draw from fanfiction about Draco and Hermoine. Rose in Chains by Julie Soto is particularly facing backlash, as readers and authors discuss if its ethical for fanfiction to be published traditionally. Many people in the queer and trans communities are also pointing to the harm JK Rowling is causing and how promotion of Harry Potter fanfiction indirectly promotes Harry Potter, which can then financially benefit JK Rowling.
RomanceCon is a mess. Here’s the short story: many authors have been dropping out of the Milwaukee-based event following a schedule full of Harry Potter-themed events and it was going to feature Julie Soto. Trans folks have spoken out about how supporting Harry Potter-derived books (including Rose in Chains by Julie Soto) harms their community. RomanceCon was going to have Julie Soto as a headliner before they “mutually agreed” that she would not attend. Mischief Management is no longer running RomanceCon and it is now All The Hats Creative and indie bookseller Melody running it.
