I’m a little late to Women in Translation Month, but that’s okay since we should be reading these year round!

Also, I’m participating in the Back Indie Media Drive this September. There’s so many worthy publications who need your support. Find your next favorite read now.

Women in Translation Romance Recommendations

Like Water for Chocolate

A soap opera romance and Mexican cookbook mixed with magical realism. The story follows the youngest daughter, Tita, who must cook in the kitchen of her family’s ranch and is forbidden from marrying since she must take care of her mother.

Strange Weather in Tokyo

Tsukiko lives alone and is lonely when she meets her former high school teacher in a bar. Their relationship develops from awkward acknowledgement into love.

Half a Lifelong Romance

In Shanghai, Shen Shijun has fallen in love with his colleague Gu Manzhen. But when societal circumstances force the young lovers apart, they hold out hope of finding each other again.

Bad Girls

A group of trans sex workers make their rounds one night when they find an abandoned baby to adopt. This coming-of-age book traces life, sexuality, and love in the 90s.

Delicates

This isn’t a romance, but I think you’ll like this one. Delicates is a collection of poems by Cuban writer Wendy Guerra as she journeys through love and confronts political systems that don’t celebrate artistic freedom.
